This document is a call to action. For too long, social science research in and on Middle East and North Africa has confronted debilitating obstacles to responsible inquiry. Some of these impediments are reflections of misaligned incentives within the disciplines; some are indications of short-sighted or self-protective institutional priorities; some are reflections of misplaced political imperatives. Taken together, they have contributed to a field under duress, in which scholars struggle to develop meaningful research agendas and priorities, collaborate with their colleagues, contribute to their disciplines, and advance knowledge for their communities.
